Photo Tips III

Summer is here and with it comes thunderstorms. Ever want to catch lightning? Alright here is Pete's tip for catching that brilliant flash. Ok safety first, don't stand out in the open with an umbrella, under trees, on a hill or anywhere you might have the chance of getting hit. After all who wants to have their last photo being one of themselves getting fried by a bolt of electricity. First off you are going to need a tripod or a very stable surface to mount your camera. I recommend using a wide angle lens my fave being 20mm to catch more sky. Set your camera to manual and set your shutter speed to around 15 - 30 seconds depending on weather it is night or day. Set your f-stop high between f 16 - f 22. Trying to balance the exposure with the ambiant light is the hardest part, you want to make sure that you can keep the shutter open long enough to catch a bolt as it flashes while maintaining the dramatic look of a dark sky. As the storm approaches just trigger the shutter and wait for the light show. With a point and shoot you will have to try to dial the settings down to as slow a shutter speed the camera can do and as high of an f - stop it can go. Now get out there and enjoy natures best light show.

Port Dover - Friday 13th

It's that time of year again...a time when motorcyclists from across Canada and the States converge upon the small town of Port Dover. And you can be sure Ovesny/Navarro Photography will be there documenting the whole kit n' caboodle!

We'll be in town shooting and admiring the bikes and their proud owners.

And as a special, Renee Navarro has created a photo book about Friday 13th, called "Taken out of Context". The book, along with a limited edition set of prints, will be available for purchase at the Perch Gallery in downtown Port Dover.

Pete's Photo Tips II

Alright the tip today is how to capture motion blur. There are a few steps involved in getting it done well. Doing a shot like this works best if you have your camera on manual so you can control the shutter speed and f-stop. First off choose a subject that will be moving, car, bike, train or some one running. Now stand comfortably, legs apart, hold your camera steady and pick the point that you will be taking the shot. From the point you will be shooting set up your exposure, I recommend between 1/8 to 1/10 th of a second with a 50 mm lens. Now here is the tricky part, pivot with your hip and track your subject as it moves and take the shot at the point you exposed for. The smoother you are with tracking the better your shot will be. Practice this method and play with different shutter speeds, you will find that you can get some incredible looking action shots.

We're not in the festival this year, but I took some time out on this rainy Saturday afternoon to go and check out some of the work exhibited (actually I got invited out by a good friend, because I'm a procrastinator about seeing exhibits!).

So after a full afternoon of gallery hopping, here are my favourites so far & in no particular order:

David Burdeny: Greenland/Antarctica - Galerie Lausberg, 880 Queen St West
Recurrent Memories, Historic Jewish sites in Canada & Poland - Gallery 345 (a MUST see, it gave me goosebumps), 345 Sorauren Ave.
From the Epic to the Everyday (Particularly the works by Alessandra Sangwinetti, Adi Nes & Bert Teunissen...I somehow managed to MISS the Nan Goldin works) - MOCCA, 952 Queen St West

I saw several others, but they didn't grab me the way these ones did. Do yourself a favour and head out. The festival takes part throughout the month of May in Toronto.

Pete's Photo Tips

Something new for all who follow our blog. I am going to start posting a new tip every two weeks to help everyone out there wanting to take better photos. Ok first tip, introduce yourself to your camera. Not just in the hi how are you sense, learn how to use the features that are built in and get familiar with those functions. As bad as this sounds, READ THE MANUAL! This goes for point and shoot cameras as well as SLR and DSLR cameras. After all when it comes to taking good photo's the camera's brain can only do so much it's your brain that has to make the image work.

A big year already
